Echinocactus polycephalus subsp. polycephalus is a rare, slow-growing barrel cactus native to the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of California, Nevada, Arizona, and Baja California. It is best known for forming clusters (“polycephalus” means “many-headed”) of multiple barrel-shaped stems, each densely covered with stiff reddish spines.
